The Manische-spritz is the coolest cocktail to shake up your next shabbat. Whether you’re Jewish Orthodox and celebrating a weekly Sabbath, or just seasonally celebrate Yom Kippur and Hanukkah, it’s time to mix up the Manischewitz that always finds its way to your table. Here is our favorite Manischewitz Spritz recipe!
What is a Manischewitz Spritz?
Fun fact: Manischewitz is actually a brand name, and the company, also called Manischewitz, produces many kosher products, not just wine. Manischewitz places a great value on tradition. Impressively, they have been producing high-quality Kosher wines since 1947, and are currently the #1 Kosher wine brand in the USA! Because of their popularity, much like “Kleenex” is often used as a synonym for “facial tissue,” “Manischewitz” has become nearly synonymous with “Kosher wines.”
Some criticize Manischewitz for being overly sweet. (And not just the normal kind of sweetness you’d expect from a fruit-forward wine.) Manischewitz can taste spoonful-of-sugar sweet. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it wouldn’t be some people’s first choice. What’s most interesting is the story behind the sweetness.
At the time that Manischewitz Co. started producing wines, they were only able to get local grapes from upstate New York. The only grape growing in that region at the time was the Concord grape. For those of you who don’t know, Concord grapes are just normal grapes, like the kind that produces the J in your PB&J. When fermented, the Concord grape produces very sour wine. So, just as Smuckers adds a ton of sugar to their grape jelly, Manischewitz had to add sugar to make their wines more pleasant to drink. Regardless of whether or not you enjoy the taste of original Manischewitz, having the same drink every holiday can get a bit monotonous. So, we’ve decided to mix up the mundane with a bubbly version of Manischewitz. Drumroll please...the Manische-spritz!
