If you don’t have plans for Valentine's Day, you do now. There’s truly nothing like queuing up an equal parts cringeworthy/heartwarming romantic comedy and settling in for the night with a glass (or two) of wine.
Contrary to popular opinion, rom-coms aren’t for the faint of heart. This rollercoaster of emotions will have you chuckling one moment and blinking away tears the next.
Whether you’re enjoying a Galentine’s movie night with the girls, convincing your significant other to watch alongside you, or viewing solo, here’s a list of our favorite rom coms and wine pairings.
Hitch
Watching Will Smith play love doctor is both entertaining and heartwarming. Watching him fall in love as he guides his client, Albert, is a twist we all saw coming.
This chaotic rom-com is good for a few laughs, but deep down it gives you the warm and fuzzies.
We recommend a glass of Rosé to mimic the scene where he literally drinks from a bottle of Benadryl with a straw. Pink drink encouraged. Straw optional.
10 Things I Hate About You
A modernization of William Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew, this 90’s rom-com tells the love story of high school teens struggling with the dating limitations of a comically strict father.
Crack open something dark and misunderstood like Patrick and Kat. But don’t let the pronunciation (or the label) fool you. We recommend a glass of Beaujolais - a Gamay-based, medium-light bodied red wine with notes of pomegranate, blackberry bramble, and violet.
Once you’re a glass in, dark and brooding turns into Heath Ledger’s iconic “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” schoolyard serenade and paints the picture of a paintball adventure.
Midnight in Paris
What could possibly suit an evening of galavanting with the likes of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, and Picasso? Owen Wilson would reach for the French wine, of course. Transport yourself back to 1920’s Paris and find a sanctuary of your own in a Bordeaux blend. This red blend is usually a combination of two or more Bordeaux varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Carmenère and Malbec.
Sleepless in Seattle
For this classic, we recommend enjoying one of the first grape varieties grown in Washington state. Pop open a bottle of Riesling as you watch Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks fall for each other from opposite sides of the country. It’s just the kind of wine that will make you want to fall in love with someone you’ve never met before.
Bridget Jones’ Diary
This pairing needs no explanation beyond the infamous Bridget Jones’ diary entry.
“Dear dairy, I’ve failed again. I’ve poured an enormous glass of Chardonnay, and I’m going to put my head in the oven.”
Pour yourself a (regular sized) glass of Chardonnay as you watch Renée Zellweger navigate the relatable chaos that is her love life.
When Harry Met Sally
Can a man and a woman just be friends? When Harry Met Sally may go down as one of the greatest rom coms of all time.
The pairing comes, of course, from Sally’s infamous “performance” at Katz’s Deli. We’ll have what she’s having, a glass of Syrah. Also known as Shiraz in Australia, this full-bodied red has notes of dark fruit and smoke and pairs well with the kind of meat you’d order at a deli.
How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days
For this romantic comedy, you’ll need an easy drinking wine due to the second hand embarrassment you’ll undoubtedly feel as you watch Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey duke it out. Three words - The Fern Scene.
For such an occasion, we suggest you pop a bottle of sparkling wine. The bubbles will match Andie’s sparkling personality, and the color resembles her show-stopping yellow dress.
Don’t forget to pop that sparkling in the refrigerator a few hours before you cozy up on the couch. Sparkling wine is best served chilled, and this is the perfect opportunity to “frost yourself.”
Say Anything
A classic calls for a classic. Go with a traditional Cabernet Sauvignon and raise your glass when John Cusack lifts up his boombox during the iconic “In Your Eyes” scene.
Pretty in Pink
If the title of the movie doesn’t say it all, the The “Sixteen Candles” actress Molly Ringwald strikes us as someone who’d love a glass of sparkling Rosé.
