How Does the Algorithm Work?
Our algorithm is informed by three essential data touchpoints. The process begins when you take our quiz. The next bit of the equation is in the hands of the certified sommeliers at Bright Cellars (plus, a little assistance from two super smart MIT grads!) The final element comes with members rating their wines.
The Quiz
It all starts with a quick, 30 second quiz. This quiz asks questions about your palate, like “what’s your favorite kind of juice?” or “dark chocolate, white chocolate, or milk chocolate?”
After you’ve taken the quiz, we rank your preferences and match them to the wines with similar attributes and characteristics. Your first box is usually a home run (but if it’s not, we’re always happy to send you a replacement bottle in your next box.)
The Magic Behind Behind the Curtain
Now, we know what you’re thinking. How could we reveal the secret sauce responsible for delivering wine you love to your door? We’re keeping some details close to home, but we’re happy to shed some light on how the magic happens.
First, our in-house sommeliers take stock of 18+ attributes that make a wine unique, from body and sweetness level to flavor notes.
Our somms take this step in the process seriously. In fact, only a small percentage of the wines they taste end up making it into our coveted wine rotation to be matched with our members.
Then we use what we call Bright Points (those attributes we spoke about earlier) to score each wine based on how it addresses your specific preferences. This is where your quiz answers really come into play.
Like Wine, It Gets Better with Time
The reason our algorithm is so good? It’s constantly learning about your taste preferences! We always encourage our members to rate their wines so they receive more spot-on matches down the line.
When you rate your wines, you attribute numerical values to each bottle, but you also have the opportunity to add comments. These comments are then reviewed by our attentive staff.
This is a point of pride for us! We combine the personal touch of a Wine Concierge with the powerhouse knowledge of a surefire algorithm created by two MIT grads. If you ask us, that’s as smart as it gets.
